I regularly do vanity searches. Not because I'm vain, per se, but because it's a good way to find reviews of your work that might not otherwise come to your attention. It is also, apparently, a good way to find work of yours that's been published without your knowledge.
Back in September of 2002, I submitted a story here. I received a rejection for the story a month later. But apparently, unbeknownst to me, the magazine went ahead and published the story anyway, two days after I'd submitted it, as evidenced by their archives. To say I am annoyed at this discovery would be to dabble in dangerous understatements. I was never notified of acceptance (quite the opposite, in fact), let alone publication, nor did I receive any sort of recompense for my work. Worse, I lost first rights to this story without even knowing about it. So, when I tried to sell the story to other editors afterwards, I was offering them rights I no longer owned. That makes me look like a hack, and possibly even duplicitous. There's not much I can do about it now, of course, since the link to the story is no longer active, and the magazine has long since ceased paying for the "privilege" of being published in its electronic pages. But I can suggest you avoid this market. Like a panhandler with open sores and a bad case of halitosis.
Everything Else
Congrats to Eli Manning and the Giants. I wish I could say that the last five minutes of the game made up for the rest of it, but that would be a lie. At least I got to enjoy good friends, good food, and a judicious amount of alcohol. And the Iron Man commercial rocked. So, overall, the day rates a check in the win column. Heh.
