My poem, "Bait," written in a variation of a Vietnamese form known as the luc-bat, is up over at Oddlands, along with poetry by some other Marcie chick. Go check it out!

After recommendations from two opposite-ends-of-the-spectrum friends, I picked up Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. Frankly, I'm not sure what to make of it. On the one hand, it is the most obvious bit of Mary Sueism that I've read since I wrote Battlestar Galactica (TOS) fanfic back in sixth grade. The story has virtually NO plot, the characters could exist happily in Flatland, and the major lesson to be taken from the book seems to be that it's okay, as a young woman, to have no goal in life other than to exist as a barnacle on the side of an impossibly gorgeous guy who is more than likely going to wind up killing you in some horribly brutal fashion.

On the other hand, I couldn't put it down. I finished all 498 pages in about 4 hours, and the book has already spawned three sequels and a major motion picture. So, hey, kudos to Meyer for taking her Mary Sue to the bank. Maybe there's hope for some of my old fanfic, after all.

Everything Else

In 3 days, EB will no longer be a junior high student; he will be an "incoming freshman." Surely my having a high-schooler is a sign of the end times? It can't be a coincidence that the Mayans predicted the world would end the same year he's slated to graduate, heh.
