*Submission, Shroud Magazine, 5/25

My poem, "Bait," written in a variation of a Vietnamese form known as the luc-bat, is up over at Oddlands, along with poetry by some other Marcie chick. Go check it out!

After recommendations from two opposite-ends-of-the-spectrum friends, I picked up Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. Frankly, I'm not sure what to make of it. On the one hand, it is the most obvious bit of Mary Sueism that I've read since I wrote Battlestar Galactica (TOS) fanfic back in sixth grade. The story has virtually NO plot, the characters could exist happily in Flatland, and the major lesson to be taken from the book seems to be that it's okay, as a young woman, to have no goal in life other than to exist as a barnacle on the side of an impossibly gorgeous guy who is more than likely going to wind up killing you in some horribly brutal fashion.

On the other hand, I couldn't put it down. I finished all 498 pages in about 4 hours, and the book has already spawned three sequels and a major motion picture. So, hey, kudos to Meyer for taking her Mary Sue to the bank. Maybe there's hope for some of my old fanfic, after all.

Everything Else

In 3 days, EB will no longer be a junior high student; he will be an "incoming freshman." Surely my having a high-schooler is a sign of the end times? It can't be a coincidence that the Mayans predicted the world would end the same year he's slated to graduate, heh.

I think you should really give Lies of Locke Lamora a shot. I really enjoyed that novel. You know... if you are looking for other recommendations I know of a good review site... *cough* The Beezer Review *cough* Ah hem... sorry about that little something in my throat there.

By the way...

"Surely my having a high-schooler is a sign of the end times?"

Nah, not a sign of the end of times... just merely that you are getting old!

*runs away laughing hysterically*

:-D

:-) We do make it a habit of popping up in the most unexpected placed don't we. :-) Pay no mind, we are harmless... mostly.

By the way, I was thinking about other books to recommend to you... since well... I Read... a LOT.

I think one that may really catch your interest is:

The First Betrayal by Patricia Bray

Here are a few more that you may have heard of but I will mention them none-the-less.

Magician: Apprentice by Raymond Feist
The Gilded Chain by Dave Duncan (recommended to my by Erik de Bie)
Legend by David Gemmell
Kelven's Riddle by Daniel Hylton
The Briar King by Greg Keyes

I'll stop there, but if you need more let me know. :-)

I'm with you on Twilight. I could not put it down and NOTHING HAPPENED!!! I am totally in love with a fictional 17 year old boy, living dead or not, it's still wrong!

But it feels so right.

Heh

So, who would you recommend Twilight to? Friends, enemies, no one at all? Anything along the lines of if you liked Book A, you'll enjoy Twilight?

Well, it's easier to say who I WOULDN'T recommend it to: guys and serious writers of genre fiction. I think it would bore the hell out of the first and infuriate the second.

Basically, I strike out in both areas. :) I'd be bored AND infuriated. lol
