Writing

Seems to be a bit of confusion on the submission deadline for the Scribes. Technically, the Awards are for tie-in books published between January 1 and December 31 of a given calendar year. In theory, I suppose an author might not get copies of a book coming out in December prior to that month and so might need to submit later than the December 1st deadline I announced here. In an effort not to leave those people out, it looks as though the submission deadline will be extended to December 31st. So you still have time. However, I can't promise that one of my over-taxed minions, upon opening a late submission and discovering it was actually published in March of 2008, will not burn said submission in effigy instead of reading it, and I don't know that I'd blame them. Considering that the submission period is open ALL YEAR, there really doesn't seem to be any valid excuse for not getting a first or second quarter book in before now, IMO.

And in more upbeat news, thanks to the wonder of Google alerts, I discovered a very nice review of Legacy of Wolves on Erica Naone's blog. Go check it out and tell her what good taste she has! ;)

Everything Else

And in even more upbeat news, EB is currently carrying 1 A and 5 B's. Considering how he was struggling at the beginning of the year, I'm both extremely pleased and quite relieved. AND someone turned in his cell phone, which we was stolen a few weeks ago. So it's been a pretty good week in Marcyville, all things considered.

Yeah, great review! Don't you wish we could have an RSS feed set up in such a way that all our reviews, good and bad, automatically are sent to us? :)

1 A and 5 Bs...nice. I probably only topped that, like, once in my life.

Well, I think she got it all pretty much exactly right, although I didn't have an issue with Irulan's pseudo-disappearance at the end...I just assumed.

Congrats on all the good news. It always seems to few and far between these days. Nice to see.

speaking of Legacy of Wolves -

I did finish reading it. And my suspicions on the badguy was straight on.

However, that's not the part of the ending that really pissed me off.

IRULAN!!!

She was supposed to be the paladin's suppository (y'know for that seriously large stick they all seem to have twixt their nethers!?) and show him he can be *faithful* without being *rigid* and then she goes off and betrays him!?

And for what? To make sure that the werewolf is killed? Which was going to happen anyway? So it seems that she acted completely out of character, threw away her chances with the paladin and all for naught.

Please tell me this was one of those required editor things because the novel read like it was written by an author with WAY more talent than this!
(oh, and the housemarked assassin needs to return. She was cool!)

Okay, sorry, rant over.

Now a question:

Got anything else coming out soon?

Okay, I'm back after having read the review. And agree with Sheriffjoe.

I actually think the disinclusion of Irulan at the end works out better. It shows the dissolution of what was going on with (why am I blanking on names so much right now?) the paladin and Irulan. Her disclusion from the end showed more profoundly her disclusion from her life. So, when we see them come back together again (and I imagine that we would) then we get to see the full gauntlet of what happens between them.

But to have them come together at the end, knowing both are alive and healthy but can't be together right now because of her actions and his rigidness would have been unsatisfying. I would have wanted to see the confrontation and that would have left the book on an angry note. Now, the book leaves on a sad, haunting denoument.

And in not having a confrontation with Irulan, it leaves the paladin just seeming that much sadder.

What can I say, I was channeling Jaime. ;)

I do have hopes of revisiting Andri (the paladin) and Irulan again in the future (in my mind, their story is far from over), but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Anyway, I'm glad you (mostly) liked the book! :)

I knew there was more with this couple (thanks for the reminder of the name...my head is full of map studies and NRS codes and BLECH!).

I firmly believe they will be together in the future and it won't be easy. Because Irulan will have to tame herself a bit more while Andri will have to become less rigid.

But, for the most part, the writing itself was outstanding. I could see bits and pieces of the story that seemed forced and unnaturally clunky within the prose. Those seemed to be moments that stood out as contrary to what the author seemed to want to do with the story.

After all, the one clue I spoke about before was glaringly obvious so the entire rest of the book I was waiting for the real villain to show up and reveal himself.

Too bad WotC decided to pull back on their lines. I think that Andri, Irulan and the dwarf could show Salvatore how to actually write legacy characters that mean something.

Thanks

I'm really glad you saw the post, and thanks so much for your comment. It's great to get a view into how the process worked -- I'm sorry to hear you had to make cuts. I'd be really excited about further adventures of Irulan and/or Andri. I hope it happens!
