Writing

So, I got an email from my editor at Wizards today. Apparently they're on Twitter (@WotC_Novels) and would like for their authors to be, too, so they can get the word out to fans about upcoming projects, etc. So, it looks like I'll be getting a Twitter account and will begin Tweeting. Because my life is just too exciting for LJ to do it justice, heh.

More details in a day or two.

Everything Else

We celebrated Max's first birthday this weekend. We had about 70 people in attendance, half of which were kids. When everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Max, it was like a church choir. Their voices rang through the house, loud and with feeling. It brought tears to my eyes. Wish I'd thought to bring the video camera out beforehand, heh.

Anyway, as part of the festivities, we had to find a Max-safe cake recipe. I finally found one for applesauce muffins using quinoa flour and bananas as an egg substitute. Unfortunately, quinoa flour is pretty much available online only, so we were up grinding the stuff by hand until the wee hours. But we finally got enough flour to make 6 muffins, and they turned out pretty good.

All seemed well, and I claimed a mighty victory over the dreaded allergies.

Max was a little constipated the following day, but I chose to believe it was not allergy-related. But yesterday, with the appearance of the fire-engine red, super-sore diaper rash, right on schedule, I knew I could deny it no longer. The evil allergies had defeated me, yet again.

There were only two things in the recipe Max could have been reacting to -- sugar and safflower oil. After a little more research, I discovered what some of you probably already know. Namely, that cane sugar is a grain. D'oh.

My kid is allergic to sugar. Come on.

Ah, well, at least I have a year to come up with a new recipe. Sigh.

Poor baby!

Beet sugar or maple sugar next year? (People do use the latter somewhat around here; it's very sweet, so you don't need as much to get the same effect.)

Wait... beet sugar might not work after all. Is he allergic to sweet potatoes? They might be related.

Maybe best to use honey, Honey. (cheaper than Maple sugar, which is about a dollar an ounce.)

D'oh!

Beet sugar, most likely, seeing as quinoa is in the same family. Sweet potatoes are actually in the Nightshade family, and, yes, he is allergic to those, too.

Food allergies run on both sides of the family. One of hubby's cousins (actually his aunt, but younger than him, so they call each other cousins) could only eat carrots, apples and beef from the age of 3 until she was about eight. She's still horribly allergic to nuts and seafood, but otherwise can eat a pretty normal diet. I'm just hoping Max grows out of his allergies sooner than that.

FX!

i have a fair number of allergies myself. (Seriously, once when I needed surgery, they ran out of space -- twice. I remember, with a post-surgery fever of over 103, holding out my bedecked wrist and saying to a nurse, "Psst! Wanna buy a hospital bracelet?") Many of these came on late in life. Allergies are weird that way. But the types Max has, I have heard, often go away somewhere between the ages of 3 and 6 or so. One of my nieces couldn't drink milk as a baby, but when she was six, she started to be able to. Go figure. My brother still buys soy milk. Force of hobbit, probably.

So here's hoping for outgrowing!

Sugar? No wonder he has that expression. :)

He is a cutey, though.

And twitter? Noooo!! heh I've been meaning to grab "saetter" there just in case I ever need it for writing related announcements (he says hopefully).
(Arrggghh... apparently someone who writes in Japanese characters (I think) nabbed the name. Oh, well. At least there'll be no one mistaking him/her for me, though I was born in Tokyo...)

Sigh... fine. I grabbed SA_Etter. :) Not sure I'll be using it, but I wanted to claim it.
